Over the past few years, the financial need has grown among many students throughout Eau Claire. A substantial number of children receive free or reduced lunch and are unable to afford some of the basic items needed on a daily basis. Because of this need, Trinity has formed a partnership with Flynn Elementary School in Eau Claire to support students and teachers.
It has been proven that a child's cognitive, emotional, and physical development depends on access to wholesome foods and good nutrition. Research indicates that hungry children do poorly in school and have lower academic achievement because they are not well prepared for school and cannot concentrate. Many children rely on the meals they receive at school as their major source of food. On the weekends, they do not have this resource. Support in this area includes:
Since the fall of 2012, Trinity has partnered with Feed My People to offer weekend meals to students. Participating children receive two breakfast meals and two lunch meals when they leave school on Friday. The meals are nutritious, kid-friendly, and easy to prepare.
Periodically throughout the school year, Trinity provides healthy snacks to all students at Flynn.
Donations to this program should be made out to Trinity Lutheran Church with a memo of "weekend meals." Volunteers are also needed to help pack, transport, and distribute the meals. If would like to volunteer, please contact Trinity's office at 715.832.6601.
We believe that putting books in the hands of children not only encourages a love of learning, but increases self-confidence. We have therefore offered the gift of books for children to take home and keep. With many of the Flynn families, the purchase of books is a luxury they cannot afford.
Last March, before Spring Break, and again before the end of the school year, the Trinity congregation donated enough books to give each Flynn student a book. We hope to do this again in the fall. If you have new or gently used books appropriate for K-5 grade, please bring them to the office.
Clothing and Shoes
Often children at Flynn do not have adequate gym shoes to particiate in Physical Education. Friends of Flynn continues to donate new shoes to be distributed as appropriate. In addition, socks, underwear, sweatpants, and other clothing have been donated periodically throughout the school year.
A "Clothes Swap" room at Flynn was organized by Trinity volunteers to facilitate the sharing of used clothing.
Every fall Trinity collects school supplies to fill the gap for the students. These supplies are distributed by the teachers as school starts or throughout the school year as needed. When school supplies go on sale, consider purchasing a few extra notesbooks, pencils, glue sticks, and other items and bring them to Trinity's office.
Milk Tops, Box Tops, and more...
Don't throw away your soup labels, milk tops, and pop tabs. These items convert into cash for the school. Look for the collection container in Trinity's Lobby.
